Chinese Nationals Seeking Residency in Panama — Options, Requirements, and Benefits

Panama has long been a popular destination for foreign nationals seeking residency thanks to flexible immigration pathways, a service-oriented banking and legal sector, favorable tax treatment for foreign-source income, strategic location and a great destiny for retirees.

For Chinese citizens considering residency in Panama there are different types of visa options. We have found some Chinese citizens to be confused about their options for residence, we usually received costumers wanting to apply for a Friendly Nations Visa, but sadly China is not included on the list of countries that are allowed to apply for this type of residency.

Main Residency Pathways Available to Chinese Nationals

1. Own Economic Solvency (Investor Visa):

Residency through investment is an option for foreigners who invest in Panamanian real estate or through a fix rate account.

The main requirements for this type of visa would be real estate purchase or fix rate bank account with a minimum of USD$300,000.00., the applicant must also show background checks and standard identity documents. Every document coming from their home country must show an international apostille stamp to provide the requirement with legal value to be use in the residency process in Panama. It is also important for the costumer to show the Panamanian authorities that the funds use for the investment comes from abroad.

2. Pensionado (Retiree) Program

The Pensionado visa is for retirees with a guaranteed lifetime pension from a foreign source, offering a streamlined and highly beneficial residency pathway. It is one of the fastest and simplest way to achieve a permanent residency in Panama. The main requirement for the Retiree Visa is a proof of a lifetime pension or retirement income meeting a minimum of USD$1,000.00. for the main applicant, police clearance, and identification documents, every document must show the international apostille stamp.

Common Documents (general requirements)

  • Birth certificate and, if applicable, marriage certificate these documents will be needed in case the main applicant comes with a dependent (wife or children);
